It’s not easy asking for a pay rise. It can be a very uncomfortable situation between you and your boss. Asking for money can be complex, and by doing the proper research and preparation, you can make yourself look confident and in a better position for a successful pay rise.

Preparing for a salary discussion is crucial to get a good result. First, you need to get a sense of salaries in your industry or role and find ways to show your performance. And another important point is to check in with the bigger picture. What are the economic conditions at the time you are asking?

Then it’s time to set up a meeting with our manager or boss, preferably in person and privately, but with current conditions, a video call is also an option. And remember, when you ask to set up a meeting, say that you want to discuss your salary, rather than just bringing it up at an unrelated discussion. You don’t need to surprise your boss here!

How To Ask for A Pay Rise?

1. When you finally get to the meeting, start with the positives about your role and what you’re proud of. For example:

“Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me today. As you know, I’ve been working here [amount of time], and recently, I have been focusing on [short/quick summary of what you’re doing].

I really enjoy being part of [team or project you are working on], and I’m proud of the role I have played in this company/organisation.

2. Then make sure you talk about your achievements:

“Over the last 12/18months, I have [talk about your achievements which have benefited the company].” That will be an advantage if you can provide a dollar figure or percentage of how those achievements have benefited the organisation. You can say things like how you have streamlined a process, which saves the business time and money.

3. Get to the point

“With my achievements over the last 12 months and bearing in mind the benefits I have brought to the business recently. I would appreciate it if you could consider a review of my current salary.

I have researched and looked at current roles at the same level similar to mine, and I believe I have a clear view of the industry-standard salary.”

What Can You Do to Get The Pay Rise You Want?


The key here is to be prepared. Remember that before you go ahead and ask your boss for a pay review, you need to do your research. You can’t ask for something unrealistic. Make sure you go online and check for currently advertised jobs and how much they are offering. It’s essential to consider roles similar to yours and at the same level.


Run through what you’re going to say to a friend or family member. Practice how you want to say and scenarios of what your boss may say. By practising, you will feel more confident and relaxed when it’s time for the real deal.

Be Confident

After you do your research and practice what you will say, it’s time for the meeting. Be confident when talking and speaking, and know that this time is an excellent opportunity for you to highlight the value you bring to your role. The key here is to feel confident, and by preparing yourself, you will be as confident as possible.

Steps To Ask Your Boss for A Pay Review:

  1. Arrange a meeting with your boss or manager
  2. Research what other people are paying for the same role at the same level
  3. Have an appointment to discuss your current position and achievements and that you would like a salary review
  4. Send a follow-up email to say thank you, including the points you discussed and say that you look forward to hearing back

After you have your meeting, your manager will need some time to think over your request and have it approved by other stakeholders involved in salary increases. If your request is fulfilled, the exact dollar value will be revised in a later conversation. If your manager agrees to a pay rise, make sure you ask for this in writing (email is ok), clarify when the pay rise will be from, and then you can suggest meeting in another year to review your progress and salary.

What Happens If Your Pay Rise Is Not Approved?

I’m sorry you didn’t get the pay rise you wanted or deserved. Don’t get disappointed or down. Ask your manager for the reasons why your pay review didn’t get approved and then reassess again a few months later.
